基于一位读者的“我应该选择什么样的笔记本硬盘？”的问题LaptopLogic网站的编辑们决定做一次全面的测试，他们搜集来了Seagate、Hitachi、Fujitsu、Western Digital、Toshiba等众多品牌的笔记本硬盘，稍有些遗憾的是未能找来三星的产品，不过三星基本上都是5400转以下产品，所以对这次全面测试造成的影响也不算大。

参赛选手分为4200RPM、5400RPM、7200RPM三个团队入场。

测试分为综合测试项目和实际测试两大类别，在综合测试项目中，Bapco SYSmark2004SE、Futuremark PCMark 2005、Bapco MobileMark 2005、IOMeter、WinBench99等我们熟悉的测试工具悉数登场。在接近我们实际生活应用的测试项目上测试编辑选择了Windows启动时间、400M文件拷贝、400 X 1M文件拷贝、《Half Life 2》开始载入时间、《Half Life 2》关卡载入时间、空闲温度、负载工作温度、噪音等我们非常关注的多方面测试。
